Did you know the wood factory operated for 110 years?!

In 1895, Count Iuliu Andrassy opened the first sawmill in Valea Ierii (known by locals as the "Big Factory").
Machinery from Austria and Italy, along with craftsmen from Tyrol and Hungary, laid the foundation for an activity that would become the heart of the commune until 2005.

This factory was fundamental in the development of both Valea Ierii and the surrounding region.

Mihail Sadoveanu was not only a writer, but also a skilled hunter and fisherman.

In 1942, he visited Valea Ierii and was hosted by Mrs. Xenia (known by the locals as Aunt Sendi) in the parish house, which still exists today.

The writer’s experience in Valea Ierii is captured in the poem “Notes from a Gathering in Valea Ierii”, published in September 1942 in the newspaper Carpații.
The full edition of the newspaper can be found here.
